Throughout the 2016-2017 season, the Arctic Entries community is proud to donate all of its proceeds to Standing Together Against Rape (STAR). Alaska’s per capita rate of reported rape is nearly triple the national average (ref), the rate of sexual assaults of children is close to six times the national average, and three out of four American Indian and Alaska Native women will be raped during her life (ref). These statistics are heartbreaking and to grapple with this issue requires both short-term and long-term effort.
STAR focuses on education and crisis response in the Anchorage community as well as throughout the state. It provides 24-hour support and information for victims of sexual violence and their families, a state-wide crisis line, explanation of reporting and healthcare options, hospital response and assistance filing police reports, one-on-one advocacy sessions, support groups, legal advocacy and court accompaniment, and information and referral for other support agencies.
